1.4 Load Output
To prevent battery overcharging, all loads can be connected to the load output. The load output disconnects the loads when the battery reaches a predefined low voltage. Alternatively, an intelligent BatteryLife management algorithm can be used (see section 1.5).
The load output is short-circuit protected. High inrush current loads are best connected directly to the battery. If a remotely controlled input is available, these loads can be managed via the controller’s load output. A special interface cable may be required (see section 3.7). Alternatively, a BatteryProtect can be used to control the load; technical details are on the Victron website.
1.5 BatteryLife: Intelligent Battery Management
If the solar charge controller cannot fully charge the battery in a day, the battery cycles between "partially charged" and "end of discharge," which can damage lead-acid batteries within weeks or months.
The BatteryLife algorithm monitors the battery state and gradually increases the load disconnect threshold day by day until the harvested energy is sufficient to charge the battery close to 100%. Once reached, the threshold is modulated so that full charging occurs approximately once per week.
1.6 Internal Temperature Sensor
Compensates constant and float voltages based on temperature.
1.7 Automatic Battery Voltage Detection
The controller automatically detects a 12 V or 24 V system only once. Any later change in system voltage must be done manually, e.g., via the Bluetooth app (see section 1.9).
1.8 Three-Stage Charging
The controller is configured for a three-stage charging process: Bulk – Absorption – Float. See sections 3.8 and 5 for standard settings. Section 1.9 covers configurable settings.
1.8.1 Bulk: Constant current phase – delivers maximum current to quickly charge the battery. 1.8.2 Absorption: Constant voltage phase – when the battery reaches the absorption voltage, the controller switches to constant voltage mode. Short discharges keep this phase short to avoid overcharging; deep discharges automatically extend the absorption phase. Ends when charge current drops below 1A. 1.8.3 Float: Maintenance phase – applies float voltage to keep the battery fully charged. If the battery voltage drops below float voltage for at least 1 minute, a new charging cycle begins. 1.8.4 Equalization – see section 3.8.1.
